Sitting Portraits
I've always been drawn to cubism; for me it is the ultimate form of expression. Ever since seeing my first Picasso, Braque and Matisse I have bee fixated on how a subject can be simplified to minimal, essential forms yet produce powerful and provocative images.
I wanted to experiment with cubist portraits composed in steel.  At the same time I had been contemplating chairs as a vehicle to display these pieces. Chairs are such a common fixture in our surroundings that I wanted to utilize them for more than sitting. Their shape even resembles that of a canvas perched on an easel.
These chairs are comprised of  cut and "layered" steel. The completed chairs are treated with several finishing techniques and then hand rubbed to highlight details and add depth.  Seat fabric is olive tone suede microfiber but client fabrics can be provided.
Custom chair backs may be commisioned for chairs or sculptures. To do so, client provides photograph and I will create a rendering in cubist form for approval.
